Job Title: Director of Surgical Services
Hours: Varied hours weekdays, with occasional weekend hours
Supervisor: Management Company, Medical Director
Supervises: The Director of Surgical Services is responsible for directing all patient care activities within the assigned location (Admission, PACU, & Operating Room), including the performance of such activities by other RN’s, LPN’s, ORT’s and UAP according to established policies and procedures.
Coordinates with other location Nurse Managers, physicians and their office staff, vendors and corporate staff.

The Director of Surgical Services is responsible for coordinating and managing the daily staffing assignments and activities at the location. This position is responsible for supervising, organizing and implementing actions to ensure that optimal quality nursing care is provided according to policies and procedures for Gold Coast Surgicenter. The Director of Surgical Services is responsible for maintaining clinical, communication and personal knowledge and skills required to meet the challenge of delivering safe and effective patient care in the Admission and PACU. The Director of Surgical Services will be responsible for coordinating and managing the daily staffing assignments and activities within the OR with approval of the Administrator. This position provides leadership by working cooperatively with nursing personnel both at assigned location as well as others. The Director of Surgical Services is professionally responsible for the assessment, prescription, implementation and evaluation of patient care, and is accountable for the outcome of such care and demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
List of Duties and Responsibilities
A. Functions as Staff Nurse.
a. Follows job descriptions for OR/RR nurse. (See Attached)
b. Work as a team member to run the daily schedule of the Operating Room efficiently with assistance and approval of the Administrator.
a. Delegates and assigns responsibilities to provide staff with ownership.
b. Works with Doctor, Surgeons, staff, patients and their families to create the optimal environment.
c. Understands the requirements of regulatory agencies that monitor the practice of an Ambulatory facility.
d. Assist’s with implementation/compliance of Joint Commission regulatory requirements.
e. Able to present the new or updated needs of patients, staff and doctors to Administration and receive authorization to proceed.
f. Reviews competencies & nursing standards with staff.
g. Maintains proper staffing by assisting with hiring/termination or assigning of time off.
h. Knowledge of environmental standards.
i. Review/Approves all new medical staff orientation checklist (Procedure Orientation, Knowledge of Skill Inventory Checklist, and applicable competencies)
j. Responsible for Quality Assurance/Improvement.
a. Assess, records, interprets, and communicate patient data.
b. Practices aseptic technique and Universal Precaution.
c. Maintains HIPPA protocols and patient safety.
d. Uses, writes and maintains all Physician preference cards.
e. Assist Anesthesiologists as needed.
f. Reviews/Assist with organizing the daily schedule to provide the most efficient use of staff, equipment, and supplies.
D. Medical Records
a. Provides the time and staff for proper medical record documents and documentation.
b. Reviews chart for efficacy/compliance and documentation as required by Joint Commission.
E. Procure and maintains equipment and supplies:
a. Delegates or procures the most cost effective equipment, supplies and drugs.
b. Establishes and maintains par levels of every day supplies and drugs.
c. Obtains or delegates the correct maintenance checks for all equipment.
d. Interacts with surgeons and doctors to obtain or update their request for supplies, equipment, etc.
e. Ensures that all medical equipment maintenance logs are maintained.
f. Ensures that all medical equipment is functional and operational to manufactures standards to provide
F. Additional Responsibilities
a. As assigned by Management Company or Medical Director.
b. As requested by MD’s, Surgeons, staff, patients and their families.
